Keynote: Engaging Patients and Physicians - Building a Mobile, Social Health Platform

HealthTap is the first mHealth platform to engage large numbers of both physicians and consumers on mobile and online. HealthTap started by virtualizing and taking mobile the most fundamental interaction in health: the patient question and physician answer. But matching patient needs to doctor expertise requires creating a network in health, and maintaining balanced growth between patient questions and doctor answers.

In this talk, HealthTap CEO Ron Gutman will share and discuss:

  • How he built the company's Medical Expert Network from a handful of pediatricians and Obstetricians to a network of over 15,000 U.S.-doctors in 115 specialties across the country.
  • How you convince busy physicians to participate, keep them happy, and maintain continued engagement, and why a growing number of patients are using HealthTap service to receive care?
  • The thought process of deciding what interactions to transform, and how to build a different environment around new approaches to care.
  • The fundamentals required to create a good user experience (and the sequence of implementing them) in a mobile, social health platform: grow a network of expert members, develop cutting edge technology, and bring users on board with new tools and advanced interfaces.

The community thrives because it is built by people who participate and engage for the right reasons, and who are continuously adding real sustainable value to everyone involved.

Fri: 9:20 - 9:40 am

Rethinking the Healthcare Ecosystem

We know that we're at the tipping point of healthcare. We know that there are opportunities for innovation. Hear where the shifts are occurring, where walls need to be broken, and who the new players are in the healthcare ecosystem. As an insurance company, Aetna as a payor has been the hub that connects the different disparate pieces of the healthcare. Learn why they've had to transform the company and launch intrapreneurial initiatives such as their new Innovation Lab.

Fri: 9:40 – 10:30 am

Breaking Barriers: Transformations in Physician Engagement

Dr. Lyle Berkowitz, Associate Chief Medical Innovation Officer of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and a physician entrepreneur gives us the gritty world of how technology has transformed the physicians role, context, and points of engagement – this includes how physicians are interacting with patients, payors, device and equipment manufacturers, and the pharma world. Technology has invaded the practice of medicine, and not necessarily in a way that is good, productive, and safe. Where are the true opportunities of physician engagement? Do physicians need to recast their role in the healthcare ecosystem, not just a providers of care, and practitioners of medicine but as active drivers of the healthcare ecosystem?

Mike Marett, Senior Vice President of WorldOne Interactive, which recently acquired Sermo, will give us the strategy side of WorldOne's acquisitions and partnerships and how in an accelerated timeframe WorldOne Interactive has built one of the most successful physician engagement models to derive intelligence and insights from physicians as sources of expert knowledge while providing a continued engaging, positive, and rewarding experience.

Emerging Trends: Empowering Healthcare Consumers and Reimagining Wellness

Moderated by Tianyi Joe Zhu @TianyiJoeZhu - Hé Yi Ventures

Learn about emerging trends in health and wellness that are changing ways in which healthcare consumers engage with the state of their health — through data, knowledge, and support resources. Consumer healthcare is being rewritten and new approaches to thinking about wellness and illness are necessary. Empowerment of the healthcare consumer is typically seen as a positive movement, but it also requires thoughtfulness and responsibility.

Hear more about the changing nature of consumer health management:
- Jeff Hyman from Retrofit will offer his perspectives on how healthcare consumers are effectively using technology to improve their bodies, minds and souls.
- Hannah Chung from Sproutel will offer her perspectives on what it means to engage a healthcare consumer on illness, particularly when the population in question are children.

Fri: 11:45 - 12:15 noon

Emerging Trends: Liberating Data and Providing Choice Drives Healthcare Affordability

Learn about the emerging trends that will help drive down the cost of healthcare. While government and regulatory policies play a major role in healthcare affordability, there are other factors within our control that lead to smarter cost-savings, and smarter decisions. We're operating in an environment where there is ample data but there must be a conscious effort to liberate this data and recast it in a way that we can be focusing on the correct decisions in healthcare.

Dan Michelson will offer insights on the current state of how hospitals tend to conceive of cost and revenue, and why it's important to take a different approach that will provide key stakeholders and decision-makers with meaningful information that supports better decisions.

Barbara Otto will share observations on the types of information that consumers need to be aware of and how we can all do better with helping consumers understand health information that is relatable and actionable to drive deliberate decision-making.

Fri: 12:20 - 12:40 noon

Founders' Story: Joe Donlan

Joe Donlan is a serial entrepreneur who co-founded Subimo, which was acquired by WebMD. Subimo was bootstrapped all the way. Hear how they built Subimo, why they didn't take VC funding, and the decision-making process when they considering the WebMD acquisition.

In his current venture, Connected Health, Joe and his partners actually went through the process of obtaining their insurance broker licenses in every state in the US in order to better understand the private insurance exchange market and to demystify the process of matching up consumers with their insurance needs.

Keynote: TOGETHER-VILLE: Making things that matter, together

Question: What do cities, entrepreneurs, and health have in common?
Answer: They all require a collaborative ecosystem to make it work.

It is an exciting time to be a health entrepreneur but also one the most confusing times. With our systems, environments, and resources becoming increasingly complex, making decisions as an entrepreneur can be daunting.

  • How do I reach mentors and advisors?
  • Should I go for angel or vc funding?
  • What do accelerators and incubators get me?
  • How do I better understand my customers?
  • How do I learn about the nuances of health?
  • How can I pilot my product?
  • Will corporations want to partner with me?
    And so on…

Dr. Gulati will take you through a visual journey that demonstrates the key to successful entrepreneurship in healthcare today is about "we" not "me". He will share key success factors that are components of an innovative healthcare entrepreneurial ecosystem and provide a simple framework for entrepreneurs that clearly defines the collaborative opportunities that surround them in cities like Chicago.

Fri: 2:30 - 2:50 pm

Breaking Barriers: Partners in Innovation

Open will win. The democratization of creativity, innovation, and healthcare knowledge will spark a fire in healthcare innovation like no other. Dueling Keynote: The Accelerator vs. Incubator Debate

Launching any type of business is tough. Launching a healthcare business is rife with regulatory obstacles, slow sales cycles, and in many cases, validating your concept can mean life and death. Building a health tech startup is a unique challenge and a labor of love.

There are no quick ways in, and there are no quick exits...or are there? Which model works best and for what types of healthcare sectors?

Hear Joe and Unity duel it out —we promise, no blood will be spilled, and if casualties occur, we know that a poll for doctors in the crowd will yield many a volunteer.

Fri: 4:20 - 5:40 pm

Healthy Innovation Ecosystem Huddle

We're capping Day 1 of the conference with a rapid pace huddle on what it takes to have a health-y innovation ecosystem.

12 Trends Transforming Health Tech Today
Unity Stoakes, Startup Health
Unity will kick-off our Healthy Innovation Ecosystem Huddle by highlighting 12 trends that are transforming health tech and opportunities for innovation. He will share observations on the challenges facing the health tech community and provide some insights and predictions for what's to come.

Spotlight on Innovation Opportunities
John Smolen, Project IT Director, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group
As Project IT Director of two different but related groups, John has to think from both side of the fence and evaluate innovation opportunities from a scalability perspective. What are the hot areas for innovation that are either unique to, or common to a hospital and to a physician practice?

Spotlight on Innovation Models and Surprising Sources of Innovation
Alicia Heazlitt, Directory of Strategy, InnovateLTC
InnovateLTC has a different incubation model that it's experimenting with. They focus on the aging population and have learned interesting and surprising sources of innovation. This different innovation model they're pioneering in aging might in fact be the de facto standard for healthcare incubation.

Spotlight on Entrepreneurship Ingredients and Environment
Kapila Viges, Director of University of Illinois EnterpriseWorks-Chicago, Illinois Medical District
Chicago is home of the Illinois Medical District and the University of Illinois EnterpriseWorks Chicago program is spearheading a series of entrepreneurial and incubation efforts focused on healthcare and the life sciences. Kapila Viges will take us through the factors that drive innovation and growth in entrepreneurship, and the type of environments that have to be formulated to support the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Spotlight on Funding
Adam Koopersmith, New World Ventures
The funding landscape is changing. With incubators, developer challenges, and the Jobs Act driving crowdfunding, when should you participate in these options vs. the now 'traditional' model of venture capital funding? When should you raise funds and when should you bootstrap?

5:40 - 6:00 pm

Breaking Barriers: Transforming Industries through Unplatforms

What does it take to transform an industry like healthcare that is growing increasingly data rich but is also operating in a highly fragmented technology landscape? Where should healthcare providers and health tech companies be focusing their innovations?

Paul Magelli connected the dotted lines for the telecommunications industry and was approached to do the same for healthcare. Pervasive Health is taking a different approach to the healthcare technology landscape and is choosing to provide an 'unplatform' instead. Paul will take us through how this approach will lead to true clinical computing that will change the healthcare ecosystem value chain.

Hear why Pervasive chose to be headquartered here in Chicago and why Chicago is the nexus of transformation in healthcare.

  1. Happy Health: in healthcare there is constant duplication of information through the use of redundant forms when visiting a doctors offices multiple times.
  2. Care Content: over 5 million people go online every day for health and medical info, but healthcare organizations struggle to create content for their web vehicles.
  3. Care Tree: caregivers are on paper records and communicating with patients inefficiently - and they don't have compled IT required for standard solutions.
  4. NotBumped: hospitals and surgery centers lose millions of dollars because of late cancellations and poor operating room efficiency. (URL not available)
