Paul Weiss & David ComiskeyWinning application called Healthcare Quality Compare helps users easily find and compare healthcare facilities based on various quality measures. Users can search by facility type (hospital, nursing home, home care or dialysis facility), medical condition, or surgical procedure. Once a facility has been located, users can do a number of things with their search: they can opt to directly compare multiple facilities, view emergency room wait times, see ratings, access contact information and driving directions.
Background
The Problem: Consumers often have little to no idea about the quality of health care services at hospitals, nursing care facilities and dialysis units. A large amount of data.
Most consumers have little or no idea about the quality of health care services at hospitals, nursing care facilities and dialysis units. A large amount of data is available reflecting how services in local communities compare to national standards and how services rank within communities themselves. If consumers had simple tools that could enable them to better assess health care quality data in accessible, easy-to-understand formats, they could make better and more informed choices about where they seek care.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has begun making data available about important healthcare services through large databases such as “Hospital Compare,” “Nursing Home Compare,” and, “Dialysis Facility Compare.” With enhanced consumer visualization capabilities, these data could be made more useful and meaningful through geospatial mapping comparisons, graphic representation, or other means of displaying meaningful information to interested consumers.
Description
Develop prototype(s) for web and/or mobile communication technology applications to represent at least one Medicare dataset, including but not limited to: Hospital Compare, Nursing Home Compare, and Dialysis Facility Compare. Prototypes that are flexible and could have applicability to multiple datasets are desired. available reflecting how services in local communities compare to national standards and how services rank within communities themselves.
