Interview with Dr. Susan Love
Yesterday, Matthew Holt had a chance to speak with Dr. Susan Love, president of the Susan Love Research Foundation and author of Dr. Susan Love’s Breast Book, currently in it’s fifth edition. Dr. Love will be joining us onstage at the Health 2.0 Spring Fling during our panel focusing on research.
Here, Dr. Love tells us about her project with Avon, The Army of Women. Realizing that the cancer research done with lab rats doesn’t always translate well to humans, she sought out to collect breast cancer data from real women. The Army has an online group of over 350,000 women to turn to for data, with hopes of reaching 1 million (you can sign up here!). Of those women, 80% are healthy and undiagnosed, but that is exactly who Dr. Love wants to study to broaden the focus from not only a cure, but prevention.
The response to the Army of Women has been tremendous and they’re finding that women truly want to be involved. The Army will soon launch an online cohort study checking in with them quite regularly (every 3 months or so) by asking questions not only from researchers, but that those in the Army of Women say they really want to know. No old wives tale is too silly.
Listen below to hear more about the Army of Women and why Dr. Love believes in the importance of shared medical records, owned by the patient and how that relates to her mission.[audio:http://health2apps.com/news/files/2011/03/Susan-Love-Interview-.mp3]
