El Nuevo ZocDoc en Español
Online appointment booking site ZocDoc just launched ZocDoc en Español. Sites in both English and Spanish let patients look up nearby doctors and dentists in their insurance networks, view real-time availability, and book appointments online for free.
We know that Hispanics are a fast-growing population in the United States. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that between the years 2000 and 2010, the Hispanic population grew 43%. During that same time the entire U.S. population grew 9.7%.
Well over half of U.S. Hispanics speak Spanish at home, Zoc Doc said in a news release. And many of them are likely more comfortable understanding complex matters like health care in their native language than they are in English.
“Research shows that language barriers cause patients to delay care, in many cases postponing important preventive checkups and even delaying treatment of more acute health issues,” ZocDoc CEO Cyrus Massoumi said.
The good news is that there are doctors out there who speak Spanish, and databases like ZocDoc’s help to find them. Nearly 40% of the doctors listed on ZocDoc are able to speak Spanish.
Patients either use the site or the free ZocDoc mobile app to enter their location, insurance information and the type of doctor they want to see. Then they can view Spanish speaking doctors’ credentials, patient reviews and availability.
It’s heartening to see ZocDoc targeting a minority population — especially at a time when people are just starting to take a step back and brainstorm how we can distribute Health 2.0 technology to those who need it.
