HxRefactored Sneak Preview: Seth Claybrook, Interaction Designer, Cerner
What is your burning mission in health and why?
SC: I thrive on improving clinician workflows to increase efficiency, reduce redundancy and present the right information at the right time. I challenge the status quo to drive to heart of what the user is really trying to do.
What is your patient story?
SC: I was in a car accident that hospitalized me for two weeks. Multiple compound left me in a metal fixator until the open wounds healed enough to cast the bones. While in the hospital the redundancy and inefficiencies were evident. I awoke one night to an infusion of pain medication that I did not ask for. The patient in the next bed had requested medication, not me. It took an hour to sort out whether or not I had been given his medications or mine. After months of therapy and home care visits, I learned to walk again. My experiences in the hospital setting remind me of how far we have yet to go.
What new health-related website, app, or technology do you think will improve health?
SC: Mobility and connectivity are changing health care. It is connecting Patients, their families, nurses, specialists and providers to each other. We can then mine that data for patterns to improve the quality of care.
