Josh Sommer Excerpt

Josh Sommer, Executive Director, Chordoma Foundation

Josh was an freshman at Duke University when he was diagnosed with chordoma—a rare bone cancer
of the skull and spine. With his mother Dr. Simone Sommer, Josh founded the Chordoma Foundation in
2007. In addition to strategically funding research and opening up cell lines, the Foundation works to
facilitate the flow of information between researchers and is creating a template that can be applied to
speed the development of treatments for other similarly rare cancers. Josh also works with Dr. Michael
Kelley, a Duke oncologist studying the genetic basis of chordoma. And while some of us spent college
playing beer pong, at age 20 self-described college drop-out Josh was being honored as a Person of the
Year in 2008 by ABCNews.
